Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month took place from September 15th to October 15th. To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the library, we read the book Planting Stories: the Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura Belpré. Pura Belpré was a wonderful woman and storyteller who changed librarianship in New York City by offering bilingual storytimes in English and Spanish. Spanish-speaking immigrants finally felt like the library was a place where they were welcome and could belong!
Pura was such an influential librarian and storyteller that on the eve of her death in 1982, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Public Library. Now each year, the American Library Association recognizes outstanding works of children's literature by Latinx authors and illustrators with the Pura Belpré award!
Students also celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month in Art class, where they made artwork in the style of famous Hispanic artists. Their beautiful artwork is on display this month on the bookmobile!

Monarch Award
This month, students were introduced to the Monarch Reader's Choice Book Award. The Monarch Award is an Illinois book award for Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Each year, twenty titles are nominated for the monarch Award, and then in February and March, K-3 students across Illinois vote for their favorites.
We are excited to read some of these Monarch nominees together in the coming months, and to decide which book is our favorite! I will be reading six of these books with all classes: Douglas, You're a Genius!, How to Give Your Cat a Bath, Planting Stories, The Undefeated, What If... , and Under My Hijab. Your child's classroom teacher may choose to read one or more of these books as well. If you would like to read some of the Monarch nominee books with your students at home, they can be found through your public library if we do not have a copy available on the bookmobile.
